James Rodriguez, the Colombian forward who won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, has firmly dismissed speculation that he plans to retire after this summer’s World Cup in North and Central America. The 34-year-old, currently playing for MLS side Minnesota United, recorded two assists in a 2-2 draw against Austin FC on May 10.
When asked about the retirement rumors during an interview with Apple TV after the match, Rodriguez responded: “I think someone in Colombia said it just to get views. They should investigate this kind of thing more carefully. Only I know how long I want to keep playing.”
Rodriguez dazzled at the 2014 World Cup, wearing the No. 10 shirt and leading his team to the quarterfinals with six goals, including a 4-1 victory over Japan in the group stage.
He later played for top clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but his form has dipped in recent years, leading to frequent moves. This season, he joined Minnesota United on a short-term contract until June, though playing time has been limited.
“I can play for several more years. These rumors are false. I never said anything like that,” Rodriguez added.
The Colombian international is expected to join the national team camp in Los Angeles starting May 17, as he prepares for what would be his third World Cup appearance.
