Sussex endured a sloppy start in their County Championship clash against Leicestershire at Hove, dropping six catches on day one, but the visitors failed to fully capitalize on their fortune.

The only winless team in Division One this season, Leicestershire were asked to bat first after Sussex won the toss. Despite a solid 92-run opening partnership, they slipped to 209-7.

A lower-order fightback stabilized the innings, with the final three wickets adding 119 runs. Captain Ian Holland (63) and Tom Scriven (50) shared a crucial 73-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Off-spinner Jack Carson was the pick of the Sussex bowlers with 4-40, but captain Ollie Robinson stood out with a tireless spell, bowling 24.4 overs across five separate stints. He was unlucky to finish with just three wickets.

Robinson might have second-guessed his decision to bowl first on a green pitch as openers Rishi Patel and Jake Weatherald batted with ease. Patel impressed with crisp back-foot drives, while Weatherald used neat flicks and cuts to rotate the strike. Weatherald, on 16, was dropped at fourth slip—a tough chance—when the score was 26.

The early bowling lacked penetration, except for Robinson, who generated movement but had no luck.

Just before lunch, Sussex got two lucky breaks. In the 22nd over, Weatherald called for a quick single but sent Patel back, and Patel, on 45, was run out by Jack Leaning’s direct hit from point. Four overs later, at 108, Weatherald cut a short ball from Carson straight to Tom Clark, who took a fine low catch at cover.

After lunch, Leicestershire faced stiffer resistance. Sussex bowled with more discipline, only to see their fielding falter with three dropped catches in quick succession.

Jonny Tattersall, who had scored 200 runs in his previous three innings, was dropped on 12, 12 again, and 19. First, the usually reliable Clark spilled a chance at second slip off Henry Crocombe. Two balls later, Coles dropped Tattersall at first slip, much to Crocombe’s frustration. Both chances went through the fielders’ hands.

Tattersall then survived a third let-off when Dan Ibrahim, running in from long leg, dropped a pull shot off Fynn Hudson-Prentice. But he added just one more run before offering another edge to slip, where Leaning held on at third.

Captain Holland and the in-form Steve Eskinazi struggled to score freely. Eskinazi was dropped at mid-off on 14 off Carson—a difficult chance—but was caught at slip by Robinson off the very next ball.

Carson then struck twice in three deliveries. He first had Ben Cox brilliantly caught by Charlie Tear at short leg, then bowled Ben Green for a duck.

Holland and the impressive Scriven, who scored his first fifty of the season, rescued the innings with a 16-over partnership. The final moment of dropped catch came when Leaning missed Ajaz Patel at slip off Robinson just before the innings ended.
