Ryan Hadley celebrates after batting Glamorgan to victory against Somerset

Glamorgan achieved a remarkable first-ever home win in Division One of the County Championship, fighting back to defeat Somerset by two wickets in a tense final-day encounter at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.

The heroes of the match were Sean Dickson, who scored a gritty 76 against the county that released him last season, and nightwatchman Ryan Hadley, who remained unbeaten on 50 and faced more deliveries in this game than in his previous 19 first-class appearances combined. The victory, Glamorgan’s second consecutive win, pushed them to fifth in the table, while Somerset suffered their second loss of the campaign.

The chase was a nerve-wracking affair, with Somerset’s formidable pace attack—Lewis Gregory, Jake Ball, Migael Pretorius, and Craig Overton—keeping the pressure on throughout the final day. Overton bowled superbly to claim 3-60, but Glamorgan’s resolve held firm.

The match will also be remembered for Tom Norton’s hat-trick on debut for Glamorgan, making him the youngest player on record to achieve the feat in first-class cricket. His spell brought his side back into the contest after they had conceded a first-innings lead of 125.

Resuming on 140-5, the overnight pair of Hadley and Dickson ground out runs with patience and resilience. Hadley, who arrived in Wales with a first-class batting average under four, defied expectations with a mixture of sound judgment and good fortune under the new floodlights, now permitted for County Championship action at the ground for the first time.

Dickson reached a cautious half-century off 99 balls, but was dropped at slip shortly after. He eventually fell lbw to Overton after a stand of 114, having faced 154 balls and struck 10 fours. Chris Cooke survived an impassioned appeal before being dismissed by Pretorius with 28 runs still needed, reigniting Somerset’s hopes.

Hadley then launched a massive six over deep square-leg—only the second of his first-class career—and the tension grew as a caught-behind appeal was turned down. Glamorgan reduced the target to 14 by tea, but Overton removed Timm van der Gugten for six to prolong the drama. A crunching straight-drive from Hadley brought them within a shot of victory, and he faced another fierce lbw appeal from Pretorius before finally reaching an unlikely 50 with the winning boundary off the 231st delivery he faced.

Glamorgan’s Ryan Hadley told BBC Sport Wales: “It happened in blocks. This morning I came in just hoping to chip away a few runs to help the team. Dicko started really nicely, and I don’t really know what happened from there! I played and missed a lot, but somehow it worked out.”

Glamorgan now travel to Warwickshire, while Somerset (sixth) host Sussex in the next round starting on Friday, 15 May.
